Attitudes towards Sex over the Centuries

The history of pornography is worthy of a social history Master’s Degree at a top University if the last fifty years are anything to go by.

This article could be about anything sexual with graphic detail and illustrations and still be published in a mainstream magazine or on the internet without a problem and yet fifty years ago there was a famous High Court case in England over the publication of a classic novel which included the word ; fuck.

This was not the only offensive part of the book which was written by a working class miner who was used to speaking honestly and crudely as were the rest of his region of the country.

The fact that the chinless wonders down south did so in private was not the point and as usual it looked like the upper class hypocrites were about to win and get censorship on the book only to see catastrophe snatched from the jaws of victory with a brilliant summing up by a young Q.C. for the publisher and a surprise decision to allow publication.

In fifty years the changing attitude to sexual freedom has been phenomenal and yet this is just during the space of a couple of generations.

If we were all so stuffy in the nineteen sixties to the point where homosexuality was a crime punishable by prison or at least a heavy fine if caught at it, and any photograph that showed a wisp of female pubic hair or anything resembling a hard-on with a man could get the publisher jailed, then one might imagine that a hundred years earlier the situation would be far more draconian.

But don’t worry; it wasn’t, because the Victorians were the masters of hypocrisy. Behind closed doors those toffs and their ladies were as randy as we are today and one tiny bit of evidence lies in those very early pornographic black and white photographs.

If things were conceived to be stricter back in Victorian times then what about two thousand years ago in Rome with the raunchiest parties imaginable? The orgies are well documented and would even take place during Senate meetings when politicians reached climax and legislative decisions at the same moment.

One can almost hear them cry yes, yes, yes I’ll vote for that, before reaching for another goblet of wine.
